What is MMDC?
doors of modalitiyThe Middlesex Multi-Door Courthouse (MMDC) is a program operated by the National Center for Citizen Participation in the Administration of Justice (NCCPAJ), a non-profit corporation.  MMDC offers a variety of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services for court-connected cases.

The term multi-door refers to the various ADR process options available at the MMDC, including mediation, arbitration, case evaluation, complex case management, summary jury trials, mini trials, and other hybrid forms of ADR.

About MMDC

MMDC Cases

The MMDC serves cases of all types. Court screeners, attorneys, parties, or the MMDC panelists may refer cases to the MMDC. More than 80 skilled and experienced mediators, arbitrators, case evaluators, and other neutrals comprise the MMDC neutral panels; and each individual neutral has specific areas of substantive and process expertise, including in admiralty, administrative, antitrust, banking, business/commercial, civil rights, community, construction, discrimination, education, employment, environmental, family law, family business, insurance coverage, intellectual property/technology, international, labor, land use, medical malpractice, motor vehicle, personal injury, premises liability, probate, product liability, professional malpractice/negligence, real property, securities, shipping/transportation, tax, workman’s compensation, and zoning.

Parties are encouraged to elect an ADR process and select the individual neutral for their case. The MMDC staff will provide the parties with any information they may need about the ADR process options and the individual neutrals to help them make the best selections for their case.

Court Services

The MMDC is piloting three court-connected programs: mediation services for prisoner cases referred by the Superior Court, screening services for certain pro se cases of the Probate & Family Court, and screening services for certain cases of the Land Court. The MMDC is also a participant in the Superior Court’s Indigent Pro Se mediation program.

Fees, Payments & Cancellations

The cost for an ADR session at the MMDC includes an administrative fee of $150 per party, and a neutral fee of $150 per hour with a three-hour minimum to be divided among the parties. Fee waivers or fee reductions are available for indigent parties. The MMDC will invoice the parties along with the confirmation notice of the session before the scheduled session date. Payment must be received in advance of the initial session or it will not go forward.

Cancellations and postponements must be made in advance of the session. The MMDC’s session confirmation notice fully explains the MMDC cancellation and postponement policies.

MMDC Mission

The MMDC has built its reputation over the past sixteen years as an excellent provider of many different types of dispute resolution services. We are committed not only to continue this, but also to enhance the use and quality of ADR services in the community. Our staff is available and happy to assist in any way possible to meet this goal.
